Between 11w3d and 13w6d
First Stage Screening

Fetal Neck Translucency (NT) Screen + blood test  for risk of Down Syndrome.  Ultrasound measures thickness of skin behind fetus’ neck and blood test done for free beta  hCG and Pregnancy Associated Plasma Protein A (PAPP). Risk is  calculated based on the results. Read more HERE.

The test is done on the 7th floor in our ultrasound unit

Each Trimester See your dentist prior to and early in pregnancy for evaluation of your teeth and cleaning. Read more about pregnancy and dental care HERE and  THERE and also learn here  more about pregnancy and your dentist.  

Between 15 and 18 weeks
Second Stage Screening

Modified Sequential Screen measures four chemicals in blood [alphafetoprotein (AFP), unconjugated estriol (uE2), inhibin-A, total human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)]. Results are  compared to a woman's age and the NT screen and calculates risks of neural tube defect (NTD) and Down syndrome

Amniocentesis

If indicated:  Call for appointment for genetic counseling several weeks prior to amniocentesis; counselor will make appointment for amniocentesis (usually done by Dr.Grunebaum on Tuesdays in the ultrasound unit on the 7th floor). See instructions HERE

Genetic Counseling & Ultrasound

Around 20 Weeks
Fetal Anatomy Ultrasound;

 Drink 2-4 glasses of water within 1-2 hours prior to test; Do not void about 1 hour prior to test, but not to a level of discomfort.

Ultrasound:
The test is done on the 7th floor in our ultrasound unit

24-28 weeks

GCT: 1-hour Glucose Challenge Test
Instructions:
It is not necessary to fast, it is OK to eat before.
When you arrive, please drink 50 gram glucose drink,
You will then have a blood test 1-hour later
The GCT is a screening test. If the GCT is elevated (>135), then a 3-hour  GTT is needed to diagnose diabetes.
